Building A Righteous Body: 5 Commandments of Smart Dieting


To see the best results from any diet plan, you’ve got to know the “Diet Commandments”. These guidelines are essential for superior results. They will take you to the Promised Land, flowing with good health and energy.

Sadly, many dieters miss out on one or more of these rules, and it costs them their success.


1. Thou Shall Eat More Protein

Of all the foods you might eat while on a fat loss diet, protein is probably the most important. Protein combats hunger, stabilizes blood glucose levels, and prevents lean muscle loss. The result is raised metabolism and accelerated fat loss.

Don’t let your protein intake fall short. Aim to consume some in every meal and snack. For some unexpected sources of protein, consider quinoa, bulgur, avocado, and whole wheat bagels.

Eliminate processed food and give your diet a major boost. Focus on natural foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and oils, and lean proteins. This isn’t the Garden of Eden—reaching for the apple is the right choice.

You could call this commandment the Golden Rule of dieting. If you make only one change to your diet plan, make this one.

4. Thou Shall Set Short Term Goals
One diet rule that you should abide by is to continually set short term goals. Think about your strategy in the here and now, not months ahead. If your goals can only be achieved far down the road, it becomes too easy to lose sight of them.

You should also ensure that you put your goals in writing and tell a friend or family member about your intentions. The accountability will redouble your commitment.

Try thinking in two-week segments. Two weeks is generally the period necessary to form good habits, so it’s the perfect amount of time to build behaviors that stand the test of time.

What is Tinnitus and is there a cure or treatment?



Do you suddenly get up in the middle of the night hearing strange noises? Yes it can definitely be frightening, more so when you cannot find the source. Now consider for a moment that these sounds are coming from within you. Most people would be stunned to know that. Many of us do not even know that our internal organs can make sounds.

Let us try to see whether you actually heard these noises or not, and if you did, where did they come from. Now before anything, let us get this straight - yes, you actually heard those noises. No, they are not a result of a creative mind that imagined things in slumber. But having said that, it is also true that there is indeed no source of the sounds you heard. So what is it? Confused? This is a classic case of tinnitus.

What is tinnitus?

What you experienced last night (or did you just get up from sleep and switch on the computer!) is a classic case of tinnitus. This is a medical condition wherein a person hears all kinds of strange clicking, ringing, buzzing, whistling or hissing sounds within the ear. What's so worrisome about this condition for a lot of people is that, there's actually no physical source of these sounds. What makes it even worse is that, no one else seems to hear them. Frankly, these people cannot be really blamed. Naturally, if you cannot see where the sound is coming from, and if you keep hearing it, you are bound to get worried.

In tinnitus, the sounds a person hears are actually perceptions. Since there's no actual source, they are often referred to as "phantom noises". What Causes These Noises?

Sleep Apnea Treatment Without CPAP


We all know the importance of a good nights' sleep. You've had a busy day, you are tired and looking forward to hitting the pillow for that well earned rest when you can just put the day aside and recharge again for the next day.

For some of us, however, that may not always be possible. Many people have trouble sleeping for various reasons. They may be stressed about something and their mind is working overtime and keeping them awake or they may suffer from conditions like insomnia where getting to sleep is a waking nightmare. Another common cause is sleep apnea. This happens when the breathing passages become blocked and air is prevented from reaching the lungs.

The vast majority of people with sleep apnea suffer from what’s called “obstructive sleep apnea”. When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the tissues in your upper throat relax and collapse together while you’re sleeping. This blocks the air’s passage temporarily.

Here’s how it happens while you’re asleep:
  • Travelling to the lungs, the air will make its journey via the nose, mouth and throat (all known as the ‘upper airway’)
  • Normally the rear of a person’s throat is soft and naturally falls inward when the person breathes.
  • Muscles in the throat will be working against the collapse, trying to maintain an open airway.
  • When the tissues at the rear of the throat collapse and become temporarily blocked off, apnea will happen and the person’s breathing is halted (“apnea” is a Greek word that means “cessation of breath”).
  • Apnea can also occur if a person has a tongue that is too thick, or a soft palate (the back part of the top of your throat) that is flabby.
There’s also a connection with snoring here. Flabby tissues in the mouth and throat not only collapse when you fall asleep. They also VIBRATE – which is what causes snoring. So the key to conquering obstructive sleep apnea (and snoring) is to have STRONG muscles to keep your throat open while you sleep – muscles in your throat, tongue and soft palate.



One treatment that a doctor will recommend is to use a CPAP mask (Continuous positive airway pressure). This is a device worn over the mouth and nose to assist with the supply of oxygen to the lungs while you are sleeping by blowing air at a prescribed pressure. CPAP treatment can be highly effective in treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. For some patients, the improvement in the quality of sleep and quality of life due to CPAP treatment will be noticed after a single night's use. Often, the patient's sleep partner also benefits from markedly improved sleep quality, due to the amelioration of the patient's loud snoring.


However, the use of this apparatus may not be suitable for everyone. The biggest drawback of CPAP is that you’re sleeping with a mask, tube, and other equipment attached to your body! This can be uncomfortable and in turn it affects the quality of sleep. There is an alternative treatment which is called “orofacial exercises”. 

The key to conquering obstructive sleep apnea (and snoring) is to have STRONG muscles to keep your throat open while you sleep – muscles in your throat, tongue and soft palate. The main reason people do exercises for obstructive sleep apnea is to build and strengthen the muscles located around their airway. By doing these exercises, the airway is a lot less likely to completely collapse and become blocked off during sleep.

The main categories of exercises for each body area are:
  • Tongue exercises
  • Jaw exercises
  • Throat exercises
  • Soft palate exercises
  • Facial exercises
Obstructive sleep apnea exercises are all connected with the face, throat, mouth, nose and neck region of the body. The general concept is to strengthen, exercise and train certain muscles, making the airway easier to access during the night while sleeping.

Here is an example of an exercise that has been proven to significantly reduce sleep apnea: it’s called “soft palate blowing”.

The steps to do soft palate blowing are as follows:
  • Inhale air through your nose.
  • Exhale via your mouth. As you exhale press your lips together. This action forms a resistance.
  • When you exhale tighten your abdomen.
  • Maintain the blowing for 5 seconds.
  • Repeat 10 times
  • A balloon can also be used for this exercise. Blow into a balloon with your mouth; after each outward breath, stop and remove the balloon; then breathe in deeply through the nose. Then blow into the balloon again, following the steps I just described.

In humans there is a fine balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Energy intake is in the form of food, and energy expenditure is in the form of the basal metabolic rate and physical activity. The difference between energy intake and energy expenditure is the net energy balance. If intake exceeds expenditure, then a net positive energy balance occurs.

Healthy eating for children (and parents)

I found this video on YouTube and think it's just classic! Ten year-old Isabelle discusses healthy eating habits and good nutrition. She doesn't mince words regarding hot dogs, donuts and girl scout cookies!

If you can't learn about healthy eating from a 10 year old then you may never learn. I suggest you watch this a couple of times and take notes. guided meditation technique - exercise for the mind




You may have heard the saying “a healthy mind helps to make a healthy body” or something similar. Like many people today, you’re probably under pressure all day with job and family, and the stress levels seem to be continually creeping up. Most days, by the time you are done with work you are too wound up to wind down.  I was in this situation and had been looking for a way to relax and balance that stress that didn't involve a glass, a pill, or a smoke! I then decided to research meditation, in particular, the guided meditation technique, and find out if this was an alternative to conventional treatments and programs. After a brief investigation and trial period, I came to the conclusion that when it comes to exercising our mind, meditation is one of the most effective methods.  Now, if the concept of meditation is something you don’t know much about or haven’t tried before, then don’t be wary or hesitant, as it is quite simple once you understand the principals and it can be very beneficial to your health.

The Wikipedia definition of meditation is as such (in brief):

 "Meditation is a practice in which an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or as an end in itself. The term meditation refers to a broad variety of practices that includes techniques designed to promote relaxation, build internal energy and develop compassion, love, patience, generosity and forgiveness.

Meditation often involves an internal effort to self-regulate the mind in some way. It can help clear the mind and ease many health issues, such as high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety to name a few. It has a calming effect and directs awareness inward until pure awareness is achieved, described as "being awake inside without being aware of anything except awareness itself." In brief, there are dozens of specific styles of meditation practice and the word meditation may carry different meanings in different contexts."


So, as you can see, there is nothing deep or mystical about it. I have been meditating for more than ten years now and have found it to be very useful and effective in helping me cope with my daily work schedule, dealing with complex issues and keeping a healthy family and social life. Also just being able to think more clearly when I need to and to make decisions without feeling pressured or stressed.

I have tried various techniques and programs over this time but recently discovered one that has the best desired effect. It’s called “guided meditation”, which is a recorded program with narration and soft background music, that leads you into a state of deep relaxation. When you’re listening to a really good one, it’s golden. But it’s got to be a really good one. I have sampled many from different sources, and I discovered they’re all over the map, from awful, to incredible. The incredible ones are super effective, and you can now sample them on-line, for free.



My current favourite is “The Healing Waterfall”, which was developed by intuitive guide and music composer, Max Highstein, and also happens to be one of the most popular guided meditations of all time. It’s sold over 100,000 copies in some 1500 stores for over 25 years. Not only is it now on-line  but it’s also quite inexpensive. The reason it’s so popular, is, simply, that it’s so good. It has a great story line, pitch- perfect soothing narration and an immersive music background that just seems to take you deeper and deeper.

starting an exercise program...the importance of a daily regime



Keeping our body and mind in a healthy state is something more of us are striving for these days. Starting an exercise program is essential and should be part of any person’s plan to achieve a state of fitness that they are aiming towards or require for their daily working schedule. This of course is just common sense, and, once we have the right mindset and are focused on our goal, we can then formulate our plan to arrive at the status that suits us and maintain it for the future.

Now, depending on your age and level of health, each of us will have a different standard or level of exercise. If you haven’t exercised in a while, you may want to start out with something like a 30 minute walk or swim and then gradually build up from there. It’s all about taking that first step and developing a habit. This may take up to 3 weeks depending on your commitment but by then it will become second nature and you will do it without even thinking about it and may even feel guilty if you don’t!

You may want to consult your doctor or a fitness expert to assist you in developing a program that is suitable for your needs and physical condition. Once you have started and are in that routine, you will look back and realise how simple it really is and your body will thank you for it.

your wellbeing....the purpose of this blog and my aim for you


I have started this blog to review and promote interesting, useful and good value products, services and programs that are related to health, wellbeing, exercise and good eating. The aim is to allow you, the visitor, to evaluate and assess in order to make an intelligent, informed decision.

My background is in the health industry where I have been active with several years experience in sales, marketing and finance. The skills, traits and knowledge I acquired have enabled me to appreciate the importance of a healthy lifestyle and proper dietary and exercise habits. These I believe are the foundations of a daily regime that we all should and must implement in order to achieve and maintain a high level of wellbeing in both body and mind. This will in turn help us cope with our lives in a more orderly and sensible manner, without feeling pressured or stressed. We, as individuals are initially responsible for our health and shouldn't have to rely on others to look out for us. It all comes down to education, awareness and plain common sense. I know you will agree on that.
